CL650/Operations Reference/Understanding Maneuvering Speeds

From HotStart

Unlike some other aircraft the speed indication on the Challenger Primary Flight Display (PFD) does not have dynamically calculated maneuvering speeds based on current weight or Angle of Attack (AoA). Therefore an understanding of maneuvering speeds and available Angle of Bank (AoB) is essential for safe operation.

Demonstrated

The aircraft has been certified to the demonstrated Angle of Bank at a given speed and configuration as shown in the following table. Maneuvering at less than the minimum speeds and/or Angles of Bank greater than published may result in a reduced margin to stall.

Configuration Minimum Speed

(kts)

Demonstrated AoB

(degrees)

Flaps 20° V2 30°
Flaps 20° VAC 30°
Flaps 0° (“Clean”) VRef +30 40°
Flaps 20° VRef +14 40°
Flaps 30° VRef +7 40°
Flaps 45° VRef 40°

Operational

However to allow for variations in pilot technique and environmental factors it is recommended to add an operational margin as shown in the following table:

Configuration Minimum Speed

(kts)

Maximum AoB

(degrees)

Flaps 20° V2 15°
Flaps 20° VAC 15°
Flaps 0° (“Clean”) VRef +40 30°
Flaps 20° VRef +30 30°
Flaps 30° VRef +20 30°
Flaps 45° VRef +10 30°
Flaps 45° VRef +5 25°

Fixed

Operators may prefer to use a fixed speed schedule during the approach phase that does not vary based on aircraft weight. Two possible schedules are shown in the following table, both allowing 30° Angle of Bank, except Flaps 45° which permits 25° Angle of Bank:

Configuration Simple Schedule

Minimum Schedule

Flaps 0° (“Clean”) 200 170
Flaps 20° 180 160
Flaps 30° 160 150
Flaps 45° VRef +5 VRef +5
